Administration brokers deal between Tribal, state, and federal governments.
Officials from the Department of the Interior (DOI) joined members of the Hualapai Tribe to celebrate the approval of the Tribe’s water rights settlement. The agreement was reached after over 10 years of negotiations between Tribal leaders, the federal government, and the state of Arizona, allowing the Hualapai Tribe the right to build and improve vital water infrastructure on its reservation.
The settlement established a trust fund for the Tribe, setting aside $312 million for the Tribe to build the infrastructure necessary for permanent water access.
“Water rights have been, and continue to be, a priority for the Biden-Harris administration,” said Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Bryan Secretary Newland. “This investment in and commitment to Indian Country, while long overdue, is unprecedented. It has led to real change on the ground in many Tribal communities, including right here at Hualapai.”
